Handmade Mini Travel Journal for Helga

After receiving a little travel journaling kit from the very creative Mary, I fell in love with the idea. I decided to make my own version of it as a Christmas gift for a penpal that goes on many weekend type excursions. The base of this notebook was the cover of one of those wee K&Company notepads (not the “mini SMASHbook”) that want you to “put cool stuff here”.

I ripped it apart by the seams and started with a collaged layer of old book pages and glittery acrylic paint. Those lovely woodcuts were painted metallic and glued into place, then I dripped some of that awesome Pēbēo Fantasy Prisme in Midnight Blue; little enamel dots and star charms are affixed into the Prisme paint.

Inside has colorful illustrations of plants from some vintage 197X gardening books as well as stickies, adhesive squares and washi for pasting in memorabilia (either permanently or impermanently) and wee notes.

Some loose flower photos from the garden books, string and a washi sample card are tucked into the front pockets. The first two pages are a matching spread of patterned paper in a vintage theme.

Most of the pages are squared (taken from a Moleskine) and sewn into the spine, but there are more decorative garden pages at the back for doodling, collage, ephemera, found poetry, et cetera.

Of course, the back pocket is full of paper treats: strips of patterned papers, transfers, cut outs, tags and stickers. I’m finally getting together the Christmas parcels for my penpals, and I can’t wait to send this one off! ❤
